Case Study: Producing ‘Kali’ (Glee) — Navigating Terrain, Tension, and an OTT Acquisition

Set against the pristine, unforgiving landscapes of rural Tamil Nadu, Kali (Glee) is a tense, slow-burn thriller that tests the boundaries of morality, camaraderie, and primal instinct. The film follows four friends from a mountain village who venture into the deep woods to hunt a wild pig, armed with indigenously brewed kadukkai and a locally crafted gun. What begins as a celebratory homecoming spirals into a dark exploration of human nature when an unexpected encounter by an isolated river stream shifts the group’s motives from hunting game to something far more sinister. After a decade away from short film production, returning to the format with Kali presented a unique set of creative and logistical hurdles. Here is a look inside the production process, from mounting a challenging location shoot to securing a distribution deal with Shortflix.

The Draw of the Rural Thriller

Rural settings offer an undeniable aesthetic value. The untouched surroundings of Tamil Nadu provide a rugged, highly atmospheric backdrop that is difficult to replicate on a soundstage. The inherent tension of a hunting expedition immediately elevated the script. While hunting is a common, though rarely spoken about, reality in rural South India, capturing that local flavor required absolute authenticity.

Casting was a rigorous process. The core four actors needed to genuinely feel like lifelong village buddies while carrying the escalating psychological weight of the narrative. We brought in seasoned professionals who understood the regional nuances of the roles. Their dedication extended far beyond performance; they embraced the challenging conditions and effectively became an extension of our crew.

Logistics and the Kallakuruchi Terrain

Authenticity often comes at a logistical cost. The film was shot in Kallakuruchi, the hometown of our director, Ruban. While this localized knowledge made location scouting straightforward, the actual execution was punishing. The narrative required an isolated mountain river stream, a location entirely cut off from vehicular access.

Every piece of equipment had to be trekked in by hand through unforgiving terrain. Shooting in November provided a reprieve from the extreme heat, but the looming threat of rain was a constant anxiety—a sudden downpour would have immediately shut down the production.

Executing a Naturalistic Visual Identity

Director Ruban’s vision relied on a clean, realistic aesthetic driven by highly intentional camera movements. Cinematographers Vijay and Murali executed this flawlessly, operating entirely with natural light to preserve the isolation of the woods.

We ran a two-camera setup featuring a Canon C70 mounted on a gimbal for dynamic movement alongside a Canon C200. Our glass package included an RF 15-35mm, an EF 70-200mm, and an RF 35mm prime. The biggest technical challenge was maintaining lighting continuity over the course of the shoot without artificial fixtures. The dense foliage of the Kallakuruchi woods paired with the cameras' built-in ND filters were critical in controlling exposure and preserving the film's moody, high-contrast look.

The Power of Live Sound in the Woods

In a thriller where the rustle of leaves or the faint voice of a stranger dictates the plot, audio is just as critical as the image. We committed to capturing live sound on location, refusing to shy away from the complex acoustic environment of the mountain stream.

This decision paid massive dividends in post-production. Sound designer Rajesh Saseendaran utilized the rich live capture to build a dense, immersive soundscape, making foley work significantly more effective and keeping studio dubbing to an absolute minimum. The authenticity of the audio track is what ultimately sells the tension in the film's climactic moments.

The Shortflix Acquisition and Beyond

The final cut of Kali delivered exactly the kind of adrenaline-fueled, thought-provoking experience we aimed for, leaving early audiences gripped and questioning the characters' moral descent.

Knowing we had a compelling, genre-bending project, we approached Shortflix. Kali filled a distinct gap in their portfolio for gritty, rural thrillers, resulting in a lucrative one-year exclusivity deal. Following this window, the film will transition to a wider, free-to-watch release.

Producing Kali was a catalyst for our team. Navigating the physical and creative demands of this project proved our capability to mount high-quality rural fiction, leading directly to the creation of two new vertical series—Kida and Anju Paisa Keni—recently released on the Kadhai Shorts OTT platform.
