Court Queen: Harithra’s Journey from a Bookstore to the National Basketball Team

Sometimes, the greatest passions are discovered by accident. For Harithra, a National Basketball Player representing Tamil Nadu, her entry into the sport wasn't driven by a grand ambition, but by a simple desire to grow taller. Today, she stands tall—not just in height, but as a champion who recently led the Tamil Nadu Women's team to victory.

An Accidental Athlete

Hailing from a modest family in Coimbatore where her parents run a local bookstore, Harithra had no initial interest in basketball. "When I was in the 4th standard, everyone told me I was too short. My mom sent me to play basketball just to see if it would help me gain some height," she laughs.

At first, she couldn't even throw the ball high enough to hit the ring. Older players would make her fetch the ball. But by the 6th grade, as her height began to increase, so did her passion for the game. By 7th grade, she was already representing Tamil Nadu in the Sub-Junior National Championship, bringing home a Bronze medal.

Overcoming Setbacks

The journey to the top is rarely a straight line. Harithra faced severe disappointment when she failed to make the Under-16 and Under-18 teams. Arriving in Chennai for college with big dreams, she encountered another major setback when her college team suffered a crushing defeat against a team from Kerala in a prestigious university tournament.

But Harithra and her teammates refused to give up. "A team with a single shared goal possesses a different kind of energy," she explains. They trained relentlessly for a year, giving more than 100%, and successfully defeated that very same Kerala team the following year to qualify for the All India tournament.

Family Support and Breaking Barriers

In the early days, Harithra's father was hesitant about sending his daughter into sports. It was her mother who became her ultimate pillar of strength—waking up early, packing meals, and pushing her to succeed. "I put in a lot of effort, but my mom put in double," Harithra proudly states. Eventually, her undeniable success on the court won her father over, and they became her biggest cheerleaders.

A Government Job Through Sports

For female basketball players in India, career opportunities have historically been limited, often forcing athletes to relocate to states like Assam or Delhi for jobs in the Railways. However, the Tamil Nadu government's initiative to allocate a 3% sports quota changed everything.

Harithra recently secured a government job through this quota. "I am the first in my family to get a government job. My mom always wanted this, and achieving that destiny for her made me incredibly happy."

The Game Never Stops

Despite securing her career and recently winning a championship in Assam with the Tamil Nadu Women's team, Harithra has no plans of stopping. "When I come home from work, it can be stressful. But the moment I step onto the basketball court, I forget everything. It brings me peace. Why would I search for happiness anywhere else?"
